National Chess Day Festival

Virginia Beach, Virginia – This fun, outdoor public event in the urban heart of Virginia Beach Town Center is designed to celebrate National Chess Day. Play will take place under tents in the Fountain Plaza.
Features include a multi-section tournament (with sections for both experienced and beginning players), free chess lessons, and a simultaneous exhibition by Virginia State champions James Schuyler and Dan Miller.
The National Chess Day Festival is free for spectators. There is a nominal registration fee for participants.
Schedule of Events:
8:00am-9:00am, On-site registration for the chess tournament
9:00am-9:30am, New player orientation
9:30am-3:45pm, Chess Tournament (four games for each participant)
4:00pm-4:30pm, Awards Ceremony
5:00pm-7:00pm, Simultaneous Exhibition
The tournament format for players will be the four round Swiss system (each player will play four games). The registration fee to compete in the tournament is $10. There will be both rated and non-rated sections.
The Simultaneous Exhibition allows players to play against one of two Virginia Champions – either Dan Miller or James Schuyler. Each exhibitor will play against up to 20 players at one time. The registration fee for the Simultaneous Exhibition is $5.
