Virginia Beach, Virginia – Funk Fest puts a new spin on the old “funky” favorites that have endured through time!  Funk, an American musical style that originated in the mid-to-late 1960’s when African-American musicians blended soul, jazz, and R&B into a rhythmic, danceable new form of music, has been a major musical influence.  Funk impacted the development of 1970’s disco music, and has even influenced house music and hip-hop.

Funk Fest will feature bands on the stage at the BeachStreet Seaside Palladium at 24th Street (24th Street Park) on Friday and Saturday.  Adding to the festivities will be “house DJ” HeartAttack!

One of the most popular funk bands of the 1970’s and 80’s, the Ohio Players, is back in the spotlight, this time emphasizing the distinctive voice and musical style of its frontman, Leroy “Sugarfoot” Bonner.  Sugarfoot’s Ohio Players will take the stage Friday night, August 27, from 8:15pm-10:45pm.

American funk music band Dazz Band, emerging from Cleveland, Ohio, have several hits, including Grammy-winning “Let It Whip,” “Joystick,” and “Let It All Blow.”  Dazz Band, known for its live performances, is a wildly-popular funk/R&B/soul act, and will perform Saturday, August 28, from 7:30pm-8:45pm.

ConFunkShun, playing on Saturday, August 28, from 9:15pm-10:30pm, is a star-quality act delivering a superb, high-energy show with electrifying choreography, glistening six-part vocal harmonies, and a dash of humor. They are, unquestionably, among the heroes of funk with romantic ballads and dance-party hits galore. Memorable melodies, inventive horn arrangements and guitar woven grooves, make the group absolutely essential to the evolution of funk.

Funk Fest is a free event open to the public.
